SAFETY AUDITS

Recommended duration:

Based on the principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), environmental safety audits conducted at targeted facilities focus on key elements such as Access Control, Surveillance, and Territorial Reinforcement.

In addition to assessing the physical environment, we also analyze program operations, including current safety and security procedures. The goal is to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of these activities in preventing workplace violence.

The proposed audits will involve visiting each directly operated location and engaging staff in reviewing safety indicators, as well as related factors such as policies, procedures, programming, and local site practices.

Each site audit will be documented in a comprehensive report that highlights key observations and provides recommendations related to safety and security enhancements, promising practices, existing deficiencies, and potential vulnerabilities.

Additionally, we will visit three to five sites following a critical incident or serious occurrence to observe debriefing and follow-up practices. Based on these observations, we will offer recommendations to strengthen future staff support and incident response processes.

Rationale

CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) is a proactive design philosophy based on the belief that the effective use of the built environment can reduce fear, violence, and crime, while also enhancing overall quality of life.

Unlike traditional security approaches, CPTED leverages natural strategies such as surveillance, access control, and territorial reinforcement to create environments that act as psychological deterrents. These design elements are intended to positively influence human behavior, making spaces feel safer and more secure.

Target Audience

Process

A letter from SHHA outlining the purpose of the visit, confirming consent to take photographs, and granting full access to all areas of the site is essential to initiate the audit process.

To support the assessment, the following documents and materials should be provided in advance:

  • A copy of all floor plans and exterior grounds

  • Relevant site-specific policies and procedures

  • Operational and critical incident reports related to the site (if available)

  • A list of staff members identified for interviews, based on the size and structure of the site

The assessed site will also designate a staff member to accompany the auditors. This individual will assist with access to restricted or locked areas and provide organizational context throughout the audit.

Interviews with identified individuals will help gather localized insights into safety perceptions, as well as potential or existing gaps in operational procedures and daily routines. Reviewing past documented incidents offers valuable information on the types of safety challenges encountered and the organization’s response, shedding light on how effectively risks have been mitigated.

All information gathered is assessed against existing policies and procedures to ensure comprehensive coverage of safety-related issues, including workplace harassment, staff bullying, and intruder-related violence. These topics should be part of ongoing dialogue within the organization.

The findings from the site visit, along with local observations, will be compiled into a final report. This report will include tailored recommendations and suggestions for enhancing policies and procedures, improving physical safety infrastructure, and supporting staff skill development to strengthen overall safety and reduce the risk of workplace violence.
