Personal self-protection techniques provide staff with the skills needed to maintain safety in situations that may escalate into physical contact. While a trauma-informed approach emphasizes prevention, de-escalation, and non-restrictive strategies, there are times when unwanted physical contact is unavoidable. This training offers practical, rehearsed methods for safely disengaging from physical interactions without causing harm. These techniques focus on maintaining control, reducing risk, and upholding the dignity of all involved.
This content is ideally delivered in combination with SHSC’s Trauma-Informed Crisis Intervention and/or Safe Strategies for Community Workers trainings. Together, these offerings provide a comprehensive framework that supports prevention, early intervention, and safe, ethical response in high-stress situations.
Rationale
In high-risk environments where staff engage with individuals in distress, the potential for physical confrontation—though infrequent—remains a concern. Without proper preparation and ongoing practice, staff may respond reactively or unsafely, increasing the risk of harm to themselves and the individuals they support. A trauma-informed safety plan must include not only preventative strategies but also effective, low-impact techniques for managing moments of physical volatility.
Providing staff with personal self-protection skills reinforces confidence, competence, and a sense of agency during challenging situations. When combined with training in trauma-informed care and environmental risk reduction, these techniques contribute to a safer, more responsive workplace culture that prioritizes the well-being of both clients and workers.
